Different types of formatting specify rules about various writing styles
The first time students confront the usage of different types of formatting, is when they prepare for writing their admission application essays. Many universities have their own preferred style of writing and ask students to familiarize with their formatting procedures.
These formats guide the students on the overall presentation of their article, which should also include the way they give details on the works of other writers, in the form citation references. There are broadly two types of essay writing formats, which characterize the writing style and presentation of any academic paper.

APA formatting
The guidelines for writing your essay in the APA formatting style require that the written papers be in the font size of 10 to 12 and in the ‘Times new Roman’ font style. The paper should be written on an A-4 size paper with margins of almost one inch left on all sides
There should be a page header on the upper right hand corner of the page giving the name of the student and his identification number. The initials or brief abbreviations of the essay title should follow this. After a few spaces, specify the page number.
While there are different types of formatting, required to write various essays, categorized under headings like philosophy, technical or literature; APA formatting is usually preferred for scientific essays. The length of the essay will determine the formation of various sections of the same. However, a normal essay should have an introduction, abstract, outline, main body and conclusion.

APA format citations
Give proper reference tags to the essay text, which you have mentioned after taking the information from other sources like internet, books or magazines etc.. While the title and the text of the essay should have capital letters for all the proper nouns, there should be a bibliography page at the end of the essay. This page should contain the whole information about the particular in-text reference that has been given under a specific tag in the essay body.
The in-text citation reference should give the name of the author, with last name as the first word, followed by the title of the publication and date of access. The internet site address should be given in full to enable the reader for visiting the mentioned website.

MLA formatting
While most of the writing style rules like the requirement of an A-4 size paper, writing in double space with margins left on all sides, are the same as APA formatting; there are specific guidelines for citing the references under this format.
