A proposal essay is written based on a specific problem which has been identified. This problem is brought to the attention of the reader and along with it a solution is presented. Most often proposal essays are written with the idea of promoting certain products or services. We all have interesting essay topics that have close affinity to us. Given the choice, make sure you select one of those. It is a fact that when you select topics which are interesting to you, you creativity flows and the interest level is high. List several areas that interest you and then some key problems within each topic for which you can propose a solution. Select the one which has the most relevant and current issues and which has a very sound solution from your side.

As an effective essay writer you should know when to narrow down or expand your essay topic. Usually students are given the number of words which they have to limit their writing to. A short essay for example should be written in 500 words or less. Therefore, in such cases you should narrow down your topic to a level which can be managed within the stipulated length. For instance, if you want to talk about an economic issue, you may not talk about the global economy but narrow it down to domestic economy. You can also decide to write on a controversial essay topic that has current pertinence. If you are intending to write a lengthy essay, then you can take a wider scope to the topic area.

Once the topic is narrowed decide on how you intend to discuss it within the essay. Are you going to talk about the problem or the solution more? This will have to be decided by you as you will be able to judge what your reader feels about the problem and the solution. If you think he will agree with the problem then you can decide to allocate more weightage to the solution. This is the same if the solution is complex and difficult to grasp. When you are at higher levels of academic studies, a proposal essay is usually written for a doctoral degree, which will be followed by a thesis. This is usually written to convince the thesis committee that the topic you have chosen is worth investigation and that if permission is granted you can further expand your knowledge on this subject and write the thesis.

It should not be a topic which has been discussed many times over and over, and which will bore the reader. The problem you identify should be real and existing and pertinent to many. The solution you propose should be viable and contain ingenuity.
