Students are required to write their extended definition essay with the purpose of explaining certain terms or complex entities in detail. For example, if the students were writing on new research and discoveries for the treatment of anemic diseases, they would be required  to define the basic disease, while detailing different forms of anemia and then elaborating on each of them in detail. However, the students should understand that an extended definition needs first the basic meaning of the term and then the description of the relevant term definition in a couple of paragraphs.
