Historical Topics Are Suitable to Write A Narrative Essay
Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009Well-organized research is necessary for planning a narrative essay
Students are required to write a narrative essay, while describing any historical event or a review on certain book or a film. However, narration of the facts that require the finer skills of essay writing is the important aspect here, as the tutors judge the analytical skills of the students for looking at the facts in the right perspective.
While some of the guidelines to write such an essay are given below, students are also advised to look at other papers like expository essay or an opinion essay for understanding the technique required in writing similar essays.
-
Select a historical event as the essay topic
As it is easier to state the facts of any historical event, it is essential that students use their own imaginative skills, to describe an event. For example the topic of “Black Holocaust’ can be detailed by the students, while quoting from various authors on the issues related to it. This topic can lead the reader to the history of “Black Wall Street” and the subsequent bombing, massacre and torture of wealthy black citizens of USA.
However, the topic for writing any narrative essay should be such that students are familiar with it and they feel confident to narrate the issues relate to the topic in their own words, while keeping in-tact the historical importance and facts of the event.
-
Prepare a research methodology
Students should investigate the facts from number of external sources that are authentic and reliable as they probe into the basis and the reasons of the events they are narrating. For example, if the topic is about the World War II, students should narrow down the subject of the essay to a particular event in the world war, which is still remembered by all of us, around the world, like the bombing of Japanese area of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
However, as the information given in the essay should be based on the facts only, students must verify the same from a number of sources and then interpret the information collected, in their own words, which should form the contents of their narrative essay.
As every essay requires a proper writing style, students should look at an essay format to familiarize with the requirements of established styles like APA, MLA or Harvard etc.. In addition, the essay narration should be smooth and free flowing, so that the reader is tempted to go through the whole essay. Therefore, a proper essay outline is also necessary to maintain the transparency.
-
Provide proper citation references
It is necessary that students provide evidence in support of their narration of facts. This evidence is mostly from the information collected through sources like internet, e-books or publications. However, students must cite the sources and the authors of such publications in the required format. The most common form of an in-text citation would be to mention the name of the author and the date of publication, within the brackets, wherever such sources are referred in the main text. While the full details should be given in the bibliography pages, care should be taken to mention the full address of the source correctly, to enable the reader’s access to the same.
As there are many narrative essay topics, students can go through type of essay for finding one of their choice.
